Allow some ice chips to melt in your mouth to help with any discomfort. Apply ice packs to face rotating 20 minutes on and then 20 minutes off for the first 48 hours.
Start with clear liquids and advance to a normal diet as tolerated. Avoid anything that is hot or spicy for today.
Please take all prescribed medications according to their directions.
Keep head elevated when resting or sleeping. A few extra pillows will do.
Tomorrow and Beyond
If you received a prescription mouthwash, use it as directed on the bottle.
Beginning 24 hours after surgery, dissolve a ¼ teaspoon of table salt into a glass of warm water. Use this to rinse the mouth several times per day for the next couple of weeks.
Gentle, soft brushing of the surgical area can be done after 48 hours. You may resume brushing your unaffected teeth right away.
Do not smoke for at least 2 weeks.
What to Expect
- You may notice some discomfort after 3–4 days. This is your nerve endings healing and is a normal response to laser surgery. This sensation will pass in a few days.
- Sutures will dissolve in time. Some dissolve in a few days; the other types may last a couple of weeks.
- Immediately after surgery, the surgical area may resemble a burn inside your mouth. Later, a white layer will form over the surgical site. This represents normal healing.
